Pour la tournée européenne de Backless, le groupe a voyagé dans des wagons privés de l'Orient-Express. Trois voitures, qui étaient conçues à l'origine pour Hermann Goering.
Muddy Waters fait les premières parties de ce périple qui commence à Madrid le 5 Novembre en passant par le Palais des Sports de Lyon le 8 et Paris au Pavillon de Pantin le 18 et se terminant le 7 Décembre à Guilford.
C’est Muddy Waters qui fait les premières parties
Le réalisateur Rex Pike a eu toutes possibilités pour le tournage d’un documentaire. Plus de 120 pellicules de film ont été utilisées. Un film d'environ deux heures, "Eric Clapton And His Rolling Hotel" a été présenté dans quelques festivals mais n'a jamais été publié officiellement.
Toutefois un DVD bootleg – Footstomp (FSVD-286-2) circule
A un moment donné, un français non anglophone journaliste à la Vie du Rail monte dans le train avec son interprète pour une interview. L'hilarité commence lorsque l'assistant virtuel de Clapton, Larry McNeny, s'approche du journaliste avec l'intention de faire des présentations à la star, mais le journaliste le prend immédiatement pour Clapton. L'assistant de Clapton s'assoit ensuite pour l'interview, et le vrai Clapton peut être vu à l'écart en train de craquer, le faux Clapton répondant aux questions dans un accent distinct du sud des États-Unis.
