Le 11 juin 1988, le stade de Wembley à Londres a accueilli pendant un peu plus de onze heures un rassemblement unique de musiciens et d'artistes du monde entier qui, sous la bannière d' Artists Against Apartheid, a rendu hommage à Nelson Mandela pour son 70ème anniversaire.
Une audience estimée à plus d'un demi-milliard de personnes dans quelques 63 pays a participé à cet événement avec un message simple mais complet. "Free Nelson Mandela"
Le spectacle a été diffusé à la radio et à la télévision dans le monde entier.
L'événement est souvent appelé "Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute"
En Amérique le réseau de radiodiffusion a refusé d'utiliser le titre du concert et l'a annoncé comme "Freedomfest"
Il est également connu sous le nom de "Free Nelson Mandela Concert"
Un bootleg broadcast vinyle LP titré "Solid Rock" est produit aux USA par Vinyl Virus (VV LP -A/B) contient les 7 titres joués par Dire Straits et E.C. Il porte la mention erronée : Recorded live in New York Nov 1988.
Rapidement ce LP sera porté sur un CD.
Aux USA en association avec BBC TV, CBS Records propose une VHS de 120mn sur laquelle seulement deux morceaux de Dire Straits et E.C sont rendus (Brothers in Arms et Wonderful Tonight)
Un DVD qui se veut officiel produit au Brésil par GOLPACO International réplique le contenu de la VHS avec des sous titres en portugais et en anglais.
En 2004 un DVD Bootleg TV broadcast de production française (RCJS) est le fait de trois fans français de Dire Straits. Les sept titres joués à Wembley y sont complétés par trois bonus enregistrés le 5 Juin 88 au Royal Albert Hall lors du "Prince's Trust Rock Gala" soit: Money For Nothing, I Don't Want To Go On With You Like That et Layla.
En Octobre 2019, le label exotique "Good Ship Funkee" (GFS045) met en vente un CD contenant la totalité du Broadcast.
